“Where are we going?” Teuila knew she sounded ungracious but she couldn’t help it. Being alone in a car with Keahi – even a car as expansive and spacious as this one – was making her hot and flustered. There’s not enough air in here…“Can we put the window down?” she asked Reuben, injecting more warmth into her voice than with Keahi. It wasn’t the driver’s fault she was stuck in close proximity meltdown with People magazine’s Sexiest Man of the Year.

“Is it too hot for you?” Keahi asked. Without waiting for a reply, he used the remote to turn the air conditioning up a notch. Which caused chill bumps down her back. Skin that would have been covered up if Bree hadn’t bullied her into wearing this damn backless shift. Even when the woman was a floating head on a camera a thousand miles away, she still had the power to make Teuila change her dress.

“No, that’s not it,” she said tersely. “I get carsick.” Lies. But she couldn’t very well tell him that being in a car with him made her hot, flushed and dizzy – could she?

The window slid down immediately, soundless and silky smooth. Which made the space seem less enclosed. But admitted a wild rush of wind that demolished her carefully arranged hair. At first she tried to obtrusively hold it in place, but then she gave up. Sullenly. Fine. I’ll just be a wild bush woman on this date and it’ll be all your fault, so stuff you, Keahi.

Finally the car stopped and Teuila got out. She looked around in surprise. “We’re at an airstrip?”

“Yes,” replied Keahi. “I hope you’re okay with helicopters.”

“I don’t know. I’ve never been on one.” Again she winced inside at the abruptness of her tone. What’s wrong with you? There’s no need to be rude to him!

Reuben stayed by the limousine as Keahi took her arm and ushered her towards a black chopper on the grass airstrip.

“Isn’t Reuben coming with us?” she asked. Nervous.

“No. I don’t usually take Reuben on dates with me.” There was laughter in his voice and she bit back on a cutting retort.

“But who’s going to fly the helicopter?” she asked. Puzzled. Looking around.

In answer, Keahi took two helmets from the panelling and handed her one. Within a few minutes she was strapped in, and he was in the pilot’s seat, flipping levers and pressing buttons. The blades started whirring. Slowly, then building in momentum until the sound was deafening. Teuila gripped the sides of the seat but was determined not to let him see her anxiety.

“You’re the pilot?” she shouted over the blades. “You really know how to fly this thing?”

He grinned, his eyes trained on the field ahead. “Licensed to fly for five years now.”

He made it sound dark and dangerous, as if he was ‘licensed to kill’, and Teuila felt another stab of resentment towards him. Did he have to be good at everything? More importantly, did she have to be so
